david’s picks

We asked local energy efficiency expert David Inger of VCREA and VCERC which energy saving upgrades offer the most dramatic energy savings.
Here's his reply.
quotesThe recommendations that make up "David's Picks" were chosen based on the following criteria:

Do it right the first time.

"There are many energy opportunities that you will only have during your construction or remodeling. For example if you don't chose high performance windows or maximize insulation, it is unlikely that you will have the chance again. Similarly, if you don't buy that Energy Star refrigerator, you probably won't be buying another one for 12-15 years. What do you think energy will cost over the life of that refrigerator? Making the wrong choice now can be a huge lost opportunity."

The most bang for the buck.

"Making the right energy efficiency decision should not be an example of 'no good deed goes unpunished.' If you are going ot make an investment in enhanced energy efficiency you should expect a good return on your investment. Let's assume you are going to spend $350,000 to construct that new 2000 square foot house. For about $500 more you can have your heating and cooling ducts tested to insure that ther is minimum leakage (lost energy).

Leave Title 24 in the dust

"Finally, the 'Picks' were chosen to enhance energy efficiency beyhond the requirements of Title 24, the California energy code. Title 24 is recognized as one of the most stringent energy codes in the nation, but it is still a minimum standard. The recommended energy "Picks" will enhance your energy efficiency by 10 to 50% above Title 24.quotes"
